Avoiding Auto Insurance Pitfalls

Are your bodily injury liability limites set high enough? Too many people continue to use bodily injury (if the other guy gets hurt) coverages of $100,000/$300,000 or less.

If you own your own home or have an above average income your bodily injury (B.I.) coverages need to be $250,000/$500,000.  The reason is simple to understand:  If you are negligent in an auto accident and the other party has a severe injury there is more of a chance than ever before that his or her medical bills could exceed $100,000.  If you are well-to-do you have more to lose.  To increase your BI coverage may cost as little as $14.00 per six months.  To offset this cost consider higher comprehensive and collision deductibles.

The average value of a vehicle on the road in Douglas County is now $25,800.  There are many vehicles that obviously exceed this value but one in five local policyholders carry Property Damage (P.D.) limits of only $25,000 per occurrence.  What if you have an accident and total the other party’s car?   For only a few quarters per month per auto insurance policy you can remedy this situation by increasing your PD coverage to $50,000 or even better to $100,000 per occurrence.

One of the best values in auto insurance in Colorado is Farmers Glass Buyback.  Our state uses gravel and sand on our snowy roads and it is not a matter of if, but rather when it will be that your windshield gets hit with a pebble.  For about $2 per month you can reduce your glass replacement deductible to $100 and repairs are free.  The cost for this coverage is higher for youthful drivers.
